Apple’s share price has passed Google’s at $632-a-share. Share prices are basically meaningless since the number of shares outstanding differ (Apple has nearly 3x the number of shares out there, and as such, nearly 3x the valuation). But the numbers are interesting in historical context. They show what a ride Apple has been on (while Google has remained relatively static).
When Google went public in 2004 and their stock immediately popped over $100-a-share, Apple’s stock was trading around $15-a-share. When Google’s stock hit $500-a-share in November 2006, Apple’s stock was around $85-a-share. When Google shares peaked in late 2007 over $700-a-share and people were wondering if the stock was the next Berkshire Hathaway (up, up and away!), Apples stock was around $150-a-share.
With the price and the number of shares outstanding, Apple’s valuation is now approaching $600 billion. The next closest company in terms of valuation is Exxon. Their market cap is $400 billion. The nearest tech company is Microsoft. Their market cap is $265 billion.

The big question is why Facebook would need to acquire a company located half way around the world if all they were doing is standard address book imports via OAuth and APIs, or proprietary but well documented protocols like Facebook uses. The implication is that these guys have serious expertise in data gathering at scale that may sometimes be in violation of the terms of service of the sites being harvested.

The big question is: will Gmail users buy into this quick sharing? Google thinks so because it’s a part of the evolution from email, to IM, to status updates. It’s also, in their eyes, a part of the evolution to the next step, Google Wave. So far, the public has proven to be not ready for Wave yet. But Buzz might be the perfect tool in getting people to think about communicating in a way beyond email and IM. Or it may be another misstep in Google’s social quest.

Ну, и серьёзный вопрос, конечно, уберёт ли Гугл френдфид в целом (все шансы), и фейсбук в частности. Как универсальная платформа — возможный вариант замены, но вот чего-то как-то кажется, что скорее это фейсбук уберёт гмейл, с выходом своей новой почтовой платформы.
Понятно, что гики свои гмейлы ни на что не променяют, но у нормального-то человека скоро ничего больше, кроме фейсбука, и не останется. Всё пожрёт проклятый долгоносик.

Internal competition is common at great companies. It can be wisely encouraged to force ideas to compete. The problem comes when the competition becomes uncontrolled and destructive. At Microsoft, it has created a dysfunctional corporate culture in which the big established groups are allowed to prey upon emerging teams, belittle their efforts, compete unfairly against them for resources, and over time hector them out of existence. It’s not an accident that almost all the executives in charge of Microsoft’s music, e-books, phone, online, search and tablet efforts over the past decade have left.
As a result, while the company has had a truly amazing past and an enviably prosperous present, unless it regains its creative spark, it’s an open question whether it has much of a future.

The iPad Comes With iBooks And Will Cost $500 To $830
The device has a 9.7 inch display, weighs 1.5 pounds, and is half-an-inch thick. It is powered by new chip made by Apple itself, a 1 GHz A4 and will come with 16Gb to 64 GB of storage. It supports WiFi, has an accelerometer, compass, and built-in speaker and microphone, just like the iPhone. The screen is a full capacitive multi-touch screen. Battery life is supposed to be 10 hour.
In addition to WiFi, it will have a 3G option from AT&T. The Wifi-only version, with 16GB of memory, will cost $499. A 32GB version will be $599, 64 GB will be $699, and with 3G from AT&T it will cost $829 (for the 64GB version). AT&T will offer two data plans: $14.99a month for 250 MB of data or $29.99 for unlimited. All the 3G iPads, however, will be unlocked, meaning they can be used on other carriers as well.
Интересно, что чип собственного производства (когда это было, со времён самодельных PowerPC?). Десять часов времени — не так много, но для нетбука с сетью и без клавиатуры — неплохо. Самое неожиданное, конечно, это ценник и отсутствие упоминания о картах памяти или внешних интерфейсах (не так критично в мире интернета, но всё же).
Из ожидаемого — использование айфоновской операционной системы и открытие книжного айтюнса с покупкой в один клик. Из смешного — отсутствие поддержки флеша, которое уже можно считать демонстративным, хотя Эппл это и не акцентирует. Посмотрим теперь, как будет Безос бороться с Джобсом, страшные бои впереди.
РЕД.: Ага, вот и ответы (глянцевые развороты на сайте Эппла про дизайн и про ТТХ) — работа с картами памяти идёт через соединитель, а для удобной работы с текстами есть или чехол, принимающий разные положения, либо беспроводная клавиатура, либо клавитура с доком. Сколько это будет стоить, я пока предпочитаю не думать.

The average young American now spends practically every waking minute — except for the time in school — using a smart phone, computer, television or other electronic device, according to a new study from the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Those ages 8 to 18 spend more than seven and a half hours a day with such devices, compared with less than six and a half hours five years ago, when the study was last conducted. And that does not count the hour and a half that youths spend texting, or the half-hour they talk on their cellphones.
And because so many of them are multitasking — say, surfing the Internet while listening to music — they pack on average nearly 11 hours of media content into that seven and a half hours.

One source told us that HTC, a Taiwanese company, is building the new Google phone, but we think that information is incorrect. We have some fairly good information that suggests Google is working with a Korean phone manufacturer on the Google phone – LG or Samsung (we mentioned this on CrunchGear earlier this week). Samsung has multiple parts in the iPhone and could be pressured by Apple not to work with Google, which says LG is the more likely partner for Google. So rumors like this one may be much more important than they first appear. But either way, the best information we have right now points directly at Korea as the birthplace of the Google Phone.

Google Music Service: The Screenshots
Запуск совместно с LaLa, MySpace и iLike. При этом переговоры идут с четырьмя мейджор-лейблами. Вопрос в том, как это всё будет связываться с деньгами для лейблов и самих исполнителей.
С другой стороны, появление конкретных треков и исполнителей прямо в поисковик даёт куда больше внимания самим исполнителям. Гугловский подход One box, совмещающий в себе всё сразу, отвечая на все возможные запросы, явно должен в какой-то момент совместить это всё с афишами, социальным графом, билетами и прочими вещами, абсолютно логично следующими из запроса «хочу U2».

Ссылки про новости и события, которые легко пропускаются, но лучше бы их потом в архиве видеть и смотреть на то, как менялся мир.
Ни одна новостная лента пока не помогает мне в этом — там либо слишком много, либо слишком мало. Приходится собирать свой собственный архив, чтобы не останавливаться, и в то же время думать о прошлом.
